Focus on Reading
Dan Willingham led an excellent deep-dive session titled “Everything Scientists Know About the Teaching of Reading.” This talk was divided into Decoding, Fluency, Comprehension, and Motivation. And the spokesperson for how children learn to read and the myths about reading.
As an elementary music educator, I had the following takeaways:Aural language is observed everywhere in every culture. And, children learn it without any instructions. So, spoken language is a natural process.…
As the Canadian economy recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a surge in job vacancies. By and large, these vacant positions required very little education.
In 2022, there is a quarterly average of 563,000 job vacancies that required a high-school diploma or less, up 70 per cent from the average in 2019, according to a new Statistics Canada report. Around six in 10 unfilled jobs asked for that level of education, a similar proportion as before the pandemic.
However, there was a notable shift in 2021 that persists to this day: There is more demand for these roles than…
An education advocacy group is speaking out against the province’s proposed plan to allow Grade 11 students to leave high school to join an apprenticeship program full time.
Earlier this year, the province announced that it intends to permit students to drop out of their final two years of high school to pursue an apprenticeship program in the skilled trades.
On Wednesday, People for Education released a report highlighting concerns with the change.
“The plan, if implemented, would make Ontario the only province or territory in Canada that would support students to leave high school to enter apprenticeships full time,…

Since yesterday’s focus was a deep dive into reading, it was a natural process to have today’s focus be on math. Our presenters explored research for instructional practices that improve outcomes in mathematics. They spoke to purposeful mathematics, meaning actively cultivating mathematics through inquiry and applying mathematics in multiple settings. Plus, the teacher should also bring a supportive mindset to math. If the teacher struggles with…
The Severna Park High School auditorium was filled with flashing lights, cheering, whistling, and soft sniffles. Thursday night as hundreds of family, friends and loved ones from across the county gathered to celebrate the 85 graduates of Anne Arundel Evening High School.
None of the graduates were silent as they walked across the stage to shake hands with Board of Education President Joanna Bache Tobin and Vice President Robert Silkworth after receiving their diplomas.
Audience members displayed balloons saying ‘Congratulations Grad’ and held cellphones high to get the best angle on the ceremony. One could almost mistake the auditorium for…
Seesaw (web.seesaw.me) has been an amazing tool during the pandemic for music educators. Many of us used it before the pandemic, but when the lockdown occurred, numerous schools assigned Seesaw as a platform for #elmused to use to teach music. It consists of numerous tools to enhance advocacy, teaching, showcasing items, and so much more. Here are some examples of how Seesaw can continue to be used post-pandemic.
Advocacy
Seesaw has the capability of connecting the students’ journals with the students’ caregivers and families. It shows families that music is more than concert preparation as you can add videos from…
The General Contractors’ Association of Toronto (GCAT), for one, “strongly supports revitalizing the graduation requirement,” says Jim Vlahos, the associations’ executive director.
“The skilled trades offer in-demand, lucrative and rewarding careers and we believe the mandatory credit will expose students to opportunities they would not have known of otherwise. GCAT applauds the work this government continues to do to address our labor shortage while promoting careers in construction, including the skilled trades and to provide a healthy perception of the construction industry to help make an informed career decision.”
“This change will result in more students being introduced to skilled…
