Welsh lessons – The Additional Support Needs Blog

So, I came across an article on Special Needs Jungle on the new Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018, which came into force on 1 September 2021. This seems to represent a sweeping change in the special educational needs framework (now to be known as additional learning needs). You can read about the changes here: The new “rights-based” Additional Learning Needs system in Wales Welsh Government Factsheet Based on what I have read, there are some interesting and welcome features in this new legislation: Covers ages 0 to 25, as opposed to 3-18 (roughly) in Scotland A…

Exclusion statistics 2020/21 – The Additional Support Needs Blog

The Summary Statistics For Schools In Scotland 2021 have been released, with the more detailed stats being available as of March 2022. These statistics are based on the annual pupil census (conducted in September 2021) and the attendance, absence and exclusion returns for the 2020 to 2021 school year. UNESCO issues urgent call for appropriate use of technology in education

Learning inequities between students widen when instruction is exclusively remote and online content is not always context appropriate. A study of open educational resource collections found that nearly 90% of higher education online repositories were created either in Europe or in North America; 92% of the material in the Open Educational Resources Commons global library is in English. Is it equitable? During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid shift to online learning left out at least half a billion students worldwide, mostly affecting the poorest and those in rural areas. The report underlines that the right to education is increasingly synonymous…

Vancouver resident Calvin Wong says he can finally start picturing a future in Canada after the federal government announced it was dropping educational requirements for Hong Kongers seeking permanent residency in the wake of the Chinese city’s crackdown on dissent. Wong, 28, had graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with a computer science degree in 2017 before moving to Canada on a work permit in 2021, looking for a life where he could enjoy “political freedom.” But immigration pathways for Hong Kong residents that have allowed thousands to settle permanently in Canada excluded…

After a decade with the Greater Essex County District School Board, outgoing director of education, Erin Kelly, is ready to pass off the reigns.  Kelly was with the Upper Grand District School Board in Guelph, where she served as Superintendent from 2004 to 2013.  She began her role as director in Windsor in August 2013.   Kelly says one of her greatest accomplishments during her time as director is leaving the board in a better fiscal position.  This was done through stringent fiscal responsibility in alignment with the board’s strategic priorities, allowing GECDSB to be able to secure capital funding for…
